BACCH 3D Sound Over Two Stereo Speakers

BACCH® 3D Sound (SP)

An advanced patented crosstalk cancellation technology, developed at Princeton University that yields vivid and accurate 3D imaging from binaural and regular stereo audio over a pair of loudspeakers. This is the same technology at the heart of the highly acclaimed high-end audio processor, the BACCH-SP, developed by our sister company, Theoretica Applied Physics.

Unlike other crosstalk cancellation technologies, BACCH® 3D Sound produces no tonal distortion and can be individualized to the listener’s head and ear shape, the particular response of the loudspeakers, and the listening geometry through a quick and easy calibration using Theoretica’s in-ear BACCH-BM binaural microphone. It can also be applied generically purely based on the approximate angle of the speakers.

3D audio through loudspeakers is no longer confined to a tight listening sweet spot. BACCH-dSP’s state-of-the-art head-tracking technology assures real-time dynamic sweet spot adjustment for seamless 3D audio over a wide range of listener locations.

BACCH® 3D Sound has been licensed in products ranging from high-end audio processors to portable consumer bluetooth speakers such as the millions of Jamboxes sold by Jawbone, with BACCH®3D Sound branded as LiveAudio .

Stereo vs Surround vs BACCH. BACCH gives immersive audio including proximity where stereo and surround cannot.

BACCH®-HP

The recently patented BACCH-HP headphones technology, which resulted from a 4-year research project at Princeton University’s 3D3A Lab, allows binaural audio to be reproduced through headphones with the following main features:

  1. The 3D image is much more fully head-externalized than regular binaural audio.

  2. Unlike regular binaural audio, head-externalization with BACCH-HP works equally well for all listeners.

  3. Rotational head tracking fixes the 3D image in space, which is critical for enhancing the perception of a realistic audio image outside the head.

  4. Advanced proprietary equalization methods are used to optimize headphones playback for BACCH-HP.

BACCH for Headphones creates realistic externalization and spatial soundstage from stereo content. Includes head-tracking.

BACCH®-X

A groundbreaking technology that uses advanced phased arrays, head tracking algorithms and dynamic parallel convolutions to deliver simultaneous sweet spots of 3D Sound for multiple moving listeners through tightly-focused beams of sound. Unlike ultrasonic-based sound beaming technologies, which have poor mid and low frequency response, BACCH®-X  is a full-band audio technology suitable for hifi applications.

Sound Stage Control

Any array of 7+ speakers, even positioned around a room or a car cabin, can be used to create a clean stereo image in front of the listener. This clean stereo image is compatible with a BACCH speaker filter, generating a BACCH 3D soundstage around the listener.

Personal Sound Zones

Any array of 8+ speakers, including in a car or on a soundbar, can created separate listening zones with 30dB of separation for users sitting right next to each other. One listener can choose completely different content from another, including silence.

BACCH® Spatial Audio Tools

BACCH Labs licenses a series of advanced tools for spatial audio applications, including augmented and virtual reality applications. These tools include algorithms for head tracking, high-resolution impulse response measurements, headphones equalization, sliding convolvers, robust FIR interpolation, 3D mixing, efficient synthesis of early reflection and room reverb, and Higher-Order Ambisonics (HOA)-to-binaural rendering. BACCH Labs is also a licensed supplier of Theoretica’s industry-leading BACCH-BM Pro binaural microphone, BACCH4Mac package, and BACCH-dSP application.

BACCH Spatial Audio Tools. Mix in 3D or Spatial, use different HRTFs or your own, realistic binaural room reflections and reverb. HOA (ambisonic) down mixing to binaural. Atmos to Binaural.
